When you think of the word “selfish”, what comes to mind? Do you think of someone in particular or certain qualities or characteristics you find to be undesirable? From a young age, we’re taught to put the needs of others ahead of us whenever possible, to think about those around us and to play fair. While there is certainly nothing wrong with fairness and the consideration of others, we often lose sight of what’s most important for ourselves and how to take personal responsibility for what we need.
Put Yourself First
“When you take care of yourself first, you show up as a healthy, grounded person in life” – Bob Rosen, author of Grounded: How Leaders Stay Rooted in an Uncertain World
Personal leadership depends on the ability to put ourselves first. We cannot lead others without leading our own lives and decisions. If we continue to feed on the belief that being self-serving is a negative quality, we’re highly unlikely to tune into what our minds are telling us when it comes to making choices. Furthermore, this idea that depicts self-interest as something we should purge as quickly as possible sends a message straight to our brains that corrupts self-love and confidence. How can we be confident in who we are if we’re constantly being told not to prioritize our own needs?
Being Selfish is Critical
If we are driven to achieve our goals, we’ll undoubtedly be called selfish more times that we can possibly count in the process. Don’t let this deter you. Setting boundaries can help keep you focused on yourself. Saying no is just as important as saying yes when it comes to personal growth. If pressure is lost on an airplane, you’re not going to walk the aisles to make sure everyone has their oxygen mask on. In fact, you’re instructed to pull that mask over your mouth first. The same applies to your goals, values, and simply who you want to be. Being selfish in life, love, business, and self-respect is critical in decision making and growth in general.
